Understanding Basket Weave Cookie Decorating
- The basket weave technique is a classic cookie decorating method that creates a woven effect.
- It involves piping vertical and horizontal lines to create a stunning basket weave pattern, or you can do a freehand style for a simple effect!
- This technique is perfect for creating a beautiful basket weave cookie for special occasions like Easter.
- With practice, you can master the basket weave technique and create stunning cookies, and even use it for cakes and buttercream icing.
Preparing the Cookie and Royal Icing
- To create a basket weave cookie, you’ll need a cookie with a flat, even surface.
- You can flood the cookie first if you’d like, but they also look great without a flood layer.
- The icing you need to use is a stiff icing. It should have the consistency of toothpaste – soft enough but not so soft it will settle into a flat layer!
- For all 3 of these designs, you’ll first need to create the basket outline, as shown in the first step.
- Fit a small round piping tip into your piping bag and fill with icing, or you can also go tipless.
Piping the Basket Weave Pattern
Piping the First Vertical Line
- Pipe a vertical line on your cookie, from top to bottom, using a steady hand and gentle pressure.
- Then, create short horizontal lines going across the vertical line. The space between horizontal lines should be small, but not too small that you can’t fit opposing lines in between.

Building the Basket Weave Design
- Once the first vertical line is covered, move to the second vertical line.
- Start by piping the vertical line first, making sure all edges of the horizontal lines are hidden under this vertical line.
- Pipe the next set of horizontal lines in the spaces between the first set of horizontal lines.
- Continue this process until the desired area is covered.

Achieving a Professional Finish
- To achieve a professional finish, make sure to pipe the basket weave pattern in a steady and consistent manner.
- Use a turntable and place the cookie at eye level to make piping easier.
- Add a rope border around the base of the cookie and another border on the top edges. This completes the basket weave piping around the cookie.
Troubleshooting Common Mistakes
- If your basket weave pattern is uneven or messy, try adjusting the pressure on your piping bag.
- If your vertical lines are not straight, try making shorter lines! Go at your own pace.
Tips for Mastering Basket Weave Icing
- Practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if the first attempt doesn’t turn out as expected.
- Use a combination of piping techniques, such as dots, to add texture and interest to the cookie.

- Consider adding a small royal icing transfers or details to complete the look.

Conclusion
- Remember, a steady hand and gentle pressure are your best friends!
- With these tips and tricks, you’ll be crafting basket weave cookies so stunning, they’ll have everyone wondering if you’ve secretly hired a cookie architect!
